The John Locke Official Summer School will launch in China in July 2025, partnering with BE Education—founder of Wycombe Abbey Schools Asia. The programme will be hosted at Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing, with curriculum and faculty entirely provided by the John Locke Institute to ensure exceptional
quality.

This course will introduce students to the principles of the academic study of economics and finance as well as the skill of crafting a unique and highly persuasive essay. Our aim is to help students be successful in writing for academia, business and finance.
The course covers political economy, microeconomics, macroeconomics, growth theory, strategic game theory, mathematics-for-economics, public policy, and financial economics. We will investigate the factors that drive a free-market economy and examine the tools governments use to, with varying degrees of success, increase efficiency, promote faster growth, mitigate inequality, produce public goods and correct externalities.

Note: The admissions process is designed to select students with a high level of English proficiency (minimum IELTS score of 6.0, with at least 6.0 in the speaking component) students with advanced verbal reasoning skills, and students with strong mathematical skills. The most important characteristic is a willingness to participate actively in small-group discussions, so good listening and speaking skills are essential.

World-renowned Faculty, Shaping Outstanding Classes
The summer school will be led by Martin Cox, Founder and Director General of the John Locke Institute, alongside distinguished professors from top universities in the UK and US. These professors are seasoned educators who regularly teach at the Institute’s programmes in Oxford, Princeton, and Washington, D.C. Additionally, a dedicated team of 10 talented academic tutors will support the professors, working
together to deliver an engaging and intellectually stimulating experience for all participants.
Mr Cox is an economist, educator and business leader. He holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) from the University of Oxford, where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Mr Cox was a Lecturer in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at Oxford, and a member of the Oxford team that founded the International Growth Centre, in 2008, in partnership with the London School of Economics. Mr Cox began his career working for an investment bank in Melbourne, Australia before moving into public affairs as Chief Executive (Australia) and Member of the World Council of the Paris-Based International Chamber of Commerce.
Competition-led, Unlocking the Secrets of Writing
Notably, the 2025 John Locke Official Summer School in China will, for the first time, include content related to the mastery of the written word. Each day from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM, a dedicated writing and analysis session will be held to teach students how to structure concise and compelling arguments and critically analyze economic
issues.
The course will guide students to analyze the underlying logic of competition propositions, master the keys to victory from the source of thinking, equipping students with the tools to excel by sharpening their English writing skills and sparking their creative potential, as well as enriching their academic profiles.

The John Locke Summer School is highly selective. Historically, for every summer school place the Institute receives between 3 and 4 applications. Therefore, participants are exceptional young students from around the globe, engaging in thought-provoking discussions, lively debates, and in-depth case studies—all conducted entirely in English. They will enjoy an intellectually immersive experience among an exceptional peer group, refining their critical thinking and independent reasoning skills.
All summer school graduates automatically become lifetime members of the John Locke Alumni Association.
